Guitars are in fact one of the most commonly played instruments world over, mainly due to the fact that it is easy to learn to play one and also almost any song can be played using the guitar. The guitar strings play a vital role in the sound the guitar makes and therefore most guitarists constantly check whether their guitar strings are in good condition. If the guitar strings are not in a good condition, there is a high chance of it snapping while playing the guitar. There are many types of guitar strings namely: classical guitar string, Acoustic guitar string, fender guitar strings, gauge guitar strings, tune guitar strings and nickel guitar string.
The classical guitar is considered to be one of the oldest types of guitars. The modern classical guitar was developed in the last nineteenth century. The type of string used in this guitar "the classical guitar string" was first made using the animal intestines and silk. The three treble guitar strings are made from sheep or cow intestine, which is known as plain gut, whereas the three bass strings is a combination of silk thread and animal gut. The gut core of the classical guitar string was covered by a thin metal wire to protect the inner gut core.
The classical guitar was greatly modified during the eve of the Second World War, where large groups of people were trying to invent new synthetic material to use in their daily life. It was then an American guitar maker name Albert Augustine had the brilliant idea of using a new found synthetic material called "nylon" to replace the gut strings in the classical guitar string. The biggest problem faced by the guitar makers of replacing the animal gut string to the nylon string was that, whether the nylon string classical string guitar will produce a different sound when compared to the animal gut classical guitar string, to which people were used to and liked back in the day. In fact, the introduction of nylon to the classical guitar string brought many staggering advantage to the classical guitar. The nylon classical guitar string absorbs very little atmospheric humidity; its surface is extremely smooth and is very cheap compared to the price of an animal gut classical guitar string. However, the biggest change came from the sound of the three bass strings, the silk combined with animal gut strings were replaced by the nylon strings, nylon has a greater resistance to traction than the silk-animal gut strings, therefore the diameter of the core string was reduced thus the metal wire was made thicker. As a result, there was a great improvement in the general acoustics of the sound produced. Hence the use of nylon truly revolutionized the sound produced by the classical guitar.
